Poconos Fall Foliage Report 2019 – #6 – Halloween Fun

Fall Foliage Report 2019 - Jim Thorpe Bike Trail
Fall Foliage Report 2019 – Jim Thorpe Bike Trail

Poconos Fall Foliage Report 2019 – #6 – October 24, 2019, White Haven, Poconos, PA – Get in your car and get to the Poconos for the last weekend of the spectacle know as Autumn! The Poconos fall foliage season has peaked in the NEPA region of the Poconos, the temperature is still warm during the day and the color carpet on the Lehigh Gorge Bike Trail in Jim Thorpe is EPIC! The autumn in the world famous Poconos of Pennsylvania has one of the largest color pallets in the world of reds, yellows, oranges and purples.

The statewide peak for fall foliage is here! Sustained seasonable to below-average temperatures continue to assist the transition to fall colors throughout the state. Peak conditions range from the eastern Allegheny Plateau eastward to the southern Pocono region, including major parts of the eastern and south central Appalachians. Excellent color can also be found in the Laurel Highlands to the southwest. Today’s wind is likely to remove many past-peak leaves in the northern tier. Fall color should be prime throughout much of the commonwealth this week, but next week appears promising as well!

Enjoy, Enjoy the great outdoors of the NEPA Poconos, and the Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Bike Tours!

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Northern Tier:  Delaware State Forest tracts are reported to be currently at peak color. Red maples, black gum, and sassafras are adding shades of red to the forest while sugar maples and birch are contributing yellow and orange. Most oaks have also changed to orange, russet, and red, adding a new component to foliage viewing. Excellent viewing can be found at Bruce Lake Natural Area south of US84, and along Route 402 from Peck’s Pond south into Monroe County. The Pinchot State Forest service forester reports that the northern part of the district (Susquehanna and northern Wayne counties) is past peak but still retaining some nice color.

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Central Region: In the central part of the district (Lackawanna, Wyoming, and southern Wayne counties), peak conditions prevail. Luzerne County is just entering peak stage. Species now in full color are oaks, sassafras, red maple, sugar maple, birches, aspen, and black gum.

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Southern Region:   Considerable fall color can be observed throughout the William Penn Forest District, especially to the north in Bucks, Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties. Many poplars are yellow and red maples have also changed. The forest understory is awash in shades of yellow in some areas from the beautiful and fragrant spicebush. A drive on Sportsman Road near the town of Robesonia is recommended for great fall color from poplars and sassafras. Excellent fall scenery can also be found at game lands and routes near Mt. Gretna and Brickerville.

The Poconos fall foliage season has peaked in the Northern and Central Tier of the Poconos, the temperature is brisk and the color carpet on the Lehigh Gorge Bike Trail in Jim Thorpe is EPIC! BREAKING NEWS: Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway to cease train operations November 25, 2019

October 16, 2019 – Port Clinton, PA – Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway (LGSR) announced today that it was closing up shop in Jim Thorpe in late November of this year. LGSR began offering passenger excursion rides out of Jim Thorpe 15 years ago. It immediately came in and cleaned out old equipment and brought a first-class operation to Jim Thorpe. Investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in facilities and equipment including its open air cars and its bike train, LGSR put Jim Thorpe on the map as a major tourist destination for rail fans. LGSR along with its sister railroad, Reading Blue Mountain and Northern (RBMN), brought over a million people to Jim Thorpe over the last decade. Recently the Jim Thorpe Borough Council sought to force LGSR to pay an amusement tax. Through its third party administrator the Borough Council brought a lawsuit seeking to recover close to $100,000 in alleged back taxes for the years 2016-2018. The best time to check out the Poconos Fall Foliage is a ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway in these next few weeks, since it won’t be operating in Jim Thorpe any longer, please give them your support. Needless to say us and ALL local Poconos and Jim Thorpe area business are not happy at all. You can read the rest of the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway Press Release here.

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – D&L Black Diamond Trail, Glen Summit, PA

Enjoy, Enjoy the great outdoors of the NEPA Poconos, and the Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival!

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Northern Tier: The recent drop to seasonable to below-average temperatures across the state has pushed the most substantial and widespread transition to fall forest colors seen so far this season. Notable changes have occurred throughout the Appalachians and the Allegheny Plateau. Northern hardwood species like maple, birch, and cherries are displaying fantastic color this week in widespread areas. Cool, rainy conditions in the current forecast foretell ending of the foliage color for majority of the Poconos this week. The best fall foliage viewing this week is in Northcentral, Northeastern and the higher elevations of Pocono Plateau of Pennsylvania.

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Central Region:  The district forester in Delaware State Forest (Pike and Monroe counties) reports fall colors at “just about prime” conditions. The cooler weather helped kick things into action with oaks the only holdout in some areas. Pinchot State Forest staff report peak conditions should last for about the next week in the northern range of the district. Sugar maples are rapidly dropping their leaves, but red maples and oaks have full color along with understory plants like fern and winterberry. This leaf change will become more rapid as the nights get colder. Viewing conditions are not as advanced in the southern part of the district (Luzerne County). Excellent color can be found at the Equinunk, Thornhurst, and Elmhurst tracts.

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Southern Region:  The northern range of the William Penn State Forest district (Berks, Lehigh, Northampton counties) is exhibiting nice fall color on sassafras, birch, and maples. A scenic drive up Texter Mountain Road through the Wertz Tract is recommended for fall foliage viewing west of Reading, Pennsylvania. The southern portion of the district is showing spotty signs of the season but is still essentially green.

Poconos Fall Foliage Report 2019 – #4 – Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival

Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival

Poconos Fall Foliage Report 2019 – #4 – October 10, 2019, White Haven, Poconos, PA – Round up your friends and family and head to the Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival this weekend! The Poconos fall foliage season is peaked right now in the Northern and Central Tier, the air is crisp, the fallen leaves look amazing on the Lehigh Gorge Bike Trail in Jim Thorpe! Nothing rivals the autumn in Pennsylvania as we have one of the largest color pallets in the world of reds, yellows, oranges and purples. The best time to witness it is now! Enjoy, Enjoy the great outdoors of the NEPA Poconos, and the Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival!

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Northern Tier: Continued above-average temperatures have slowed the progression of fall foliage across much of the state, but a line of recent, strong storms has given many commonwealth forests a badly needed “drink.” Many dull, brown leaves were stripped off, leaving a yet-to-change green backdrop of unaffected leaves, improving contrast of colors. The shot of rain, loss of brown leaves, and an imminent, major drop in temperatures should catapult much of the state’s northern tier into prime foliage viewing next week. The current foliage condition in northern forest districts is good and improving, with peak peak fall foliage conditions in the northeast. In Pinchot Forest District, northern areas (Susquehanna, Wayne counties) are on the verge of peaking by this weekend and next week will be in peak color. Several rainy, windy days have caused many trees to drop their leaves early, mostly affecting sugar maple. Many red maples and oaks have full color along with other understory plants like fern and winterberry. Leaf change will become more rapid as the nights get colder. Recommended areas for Northeastern Poconos Fall Foliage viewing are Moosic Mountain, Thornhurst, and Elmhurst tracts in Lackawanna County, and the Seven Tubs Recreation Area in Luzerne County.

Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Central Region: All of the trees in the region should be at their peak fall foliage color this weekend and next. While central counties are showing marked changes, in Lackawanna, Wyoming, southern Wayne, and northern Luzerne counties; most red, sugar, and silver maples are in full color. Birch and aspen are also starting to change. Most of the woody understory plants have started to change including high and low bush blueberry and huckleberry.

Southern Poconos:  Foresters in William Penn State Forest district report a “big jump” since last report. Color changes are mostly limited to the understory, with birch and tulip poplar turning yellow. Dry soil conditions seem to be pushing an earlier foliage change. Jim Thorpe and south are seeing noticeable changes in poplars, maples, dogwoods, sumacs, and cherries. The reds of the Red Maple and Virginia Creeper, the deep maroons of Black Gum, oranges of Sassafras, and the brilliant yellows of Black Birch and Cherry provide striking displays along the roadways and across the landscape and aren’t peaked yet. Most of the landscape is covered with Red, Black, Scarlet, Chestnut, and White Oaks which are showcasing their autumn colors. Over the few days, the Red and Scarlet Oaks will turn red, Black Oaks will show a russet brown along with Chestnut Oaks, and the White Oak leaves will turn to a purplish red color, some of our favored colors of autumn. The mountains around Jim Thorpe and the forests in Hickory Run State Park provide excellent opportunities to see, to explore and to enjoy nature at its finest! The projected date for peak fall foliage color along the Jim Thorpe Bike Trails is October 15th – 25th, 2019.

VIP Pricing currently listed on our Fall Foliage Bike Tours page on our website is valid until October 25th.

“Only a handful of regions of the world support deciduous forests that display this amazing fall autumn color and one is eastern North America”; the British Isles and parts of northwestern Europe; northeastern China and northern Japan. The forests in other regions of the world are either tropical or dominated by conifers. The Poconos Fall Foliage we feel is the best in the world because of our unique mountainous Pocono Plateau It’s a causeway of migratory birds and wind patterns that carry pollen and seeds and even clones of fauna, lichen and moss species. The types of trees that exist here also exist in other more Northern parts of the east coast exclusively and or the southern states only on mountaintops.

The PA-DCNR and Penn Woods has a great fall foliage interactive map and we use it as well as personal experiences as a resource as we travel throughout the Poconos providing our VIP Bike Rentals and Shuttle Services. We use a combination of resources we would like to cite in making this Poconos Fall Foliage Report for 2019:

  • Penn Woods Fall Foliage Interactive Map
  • PA-DCNR 2019 Fall Foliage Reports Page
  • September 26th – Oct. 2nd 2019 DCNR PA Fall Foliage Report
  • Why do Autumn leaves change color?

The PA-DCNR states on their website: “Pennsylvania has a longer and more varied fall foliage season than any other state in the nation — or anywhere in the world.“

“Only a handful of regions of the world support deciduous forests that display this amazing fall autumn color: eastern North America”; the British Isles and parts of northwestern Europe; northeastern China and northern Japan.
