Poconos Fall Foliage Report 2019 – #3 – October 2, 2019, White Haven, Poconos, PA – Gather your friends and head to the Poconos this weekend! The fall foliage season is beginning it’s peak right now in the Northern and Central Tier, the air is fresh with the smell of fallen leaves during this amazing time of year. Nothing signals the advent of autumn in Pennsylvania like the changing color of the state’s landscape, when entire forests transform into glittering displays of reds, yellows and purples. That time is now! Enjoy, Enjoy the great outdoors of the NEPA Poconos!
Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Northern Tier: The Northern Hardwood forests are coming into full color. The Oaks should be in close to full color this week and will hail the end of the color for the northern tier. While you are out mountain biking, make sure you look out for the bright orange of the Red Oaks and dark red of the White Oaks. The Wyoming Valley and Lower Wayne county area should be in peak color by the end of the week and into next weekend so check out the rail trail biking with a bike rental from Pocono Bike Rental! The Pinchot and Delaware State forests. Susquehanna and northern Wayne counties are displaying the best color in the state, currently. Red maple, sumac, and blueberry are red; while service berries are showing reddish-orange. Birches and aspens are adding yellow throughout the forest. Suggested places to go to view foliage in the region include the Equinunk Tract (River Road, Wayne County), Brownell and Rushbrook Tracts (Lackawanna County), and Abington Tract (Lackawanna County).
Poconos Fall Foliage Report – Central Region: All of the trees in the region should be at their peak fall foliage color next week and into the early part of the 3rd week of October. The Oak trees have just started to show their colors in the last few days. They are displaying a wonderful array of pigmentation. From russet orange to deep bronze, and auburn reds to a crimson hue. Suggested places to go to view foliage in the region include the Lehigh Gorge Bike Trail and Hickory Run State Park Disc Golf Course (Carbon County).
Southern Poconos: Autumn’s coloration isn’t any where near its glory. The reds of the Red Maple and Virginia Creeper, the deep maroons of Black Gum, oranges of Sassafras, and the brilliant yellows of Black Birch and Cherry provide striking displays along the roadways and across the landscape but it just simply isn’t time yet. Most of the landscape is covered with Red, Black, Scarlet, Chestnut, and White Oaks which are just beginning to reveal their autumn colors. Over the next week or so, the Red and Scarlet Oaks will turn red, Black Oaks will show a russet brown along with Chestnut Oaks, and the White Oak leaves will turn to a purplish red color that is one of the favored colors of autumn. The mountains around Jim Thorpe and the forests in Hickory Run State Park provide excellent opportunities to see, to explore and to enjoy nature at its finest! The projected date for peak fall foliage color in Jim Thorpe is October 15th – 25th, 2019.

The PA-DCNR and Penn Woods has a great fall foliage interactive map and we use it as well as personal experiences as a resource as we travel throughout the Poconos providing our VIP Bike Rentals and Shuttle Services. We use a combination of resources we would like to cite in making this Poconos Fall Foliage Report for 2019:
- Penn Woods Fall Foliage Interactive Map
- PA-DCNR 2019 Fall Foliage Reports Page
- September 26th – Oct. 2nd 2019 DCNR PA Fall Foliage Report
- Why do Autumn leaves change color?
The PA-DCNR states on their website: “Pennsylvania has a longer and more varied fall foliage season than any other state in the nation — or anywhere in the world.“
“Only a handful of regions of the world support deciduous forests that display this amazing fall autumn color: eastern North America”; the British Isles and parts of northwestern Europe; northeastern China and northern Japan. The forests in other regions of the world are either tropical or dominated by conifers. The Poconos Fall Foliage we feel is the best in the world because of our unique mountainous Pocono Plateau It’s a causeway of migratory birds and wind patterns that carry pollen and seeds and even clones of fauna, lichen and moss species. The types of trees that exist here also exist in other more Northern parts of the east coast exclusively and or the southern states only on mountaintops. Since the ski areas aren’t open yet go on a fall foliage bike tour!
