Take a journey back in time the way folks used to travel long distances post invention of the steam engine. Enjoy this relaxing train ride the full length of the Magnificent Lehigh Gorge for 25 miles. Take in Mother Nature’s beauty while deep in the forest alongside the mighty Lehigh River and its tributaries making waterfalls and white water adventures. After you reach White Haven come walk a block North up to 320 Main Street. There you will be at our shop and we will get you outfitted with your bike, helmet, map and water bottle if necessary. We will give you a set of safety instructions and then you will pedal your bike back down the 2-4% grade to Jim Thorpe at your own pace along the Lehigh Gorge Rail-Trail.
The start of the day begins in Jim Thorpe where you can just simply buy a train ticket on the 9am train to come to White Haven or reserve you seat with us over the phone and we will have your ticket waiting for you at the train station. You will board the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for about a one hour ride as the train maneuvers onto the former Lehigh Valley main line and passes Glen Onoko, the southern gateway to the Lehigh Gorge State Park.
As you comfortably ride in the historic train car the scenery is truly amazing. The train will follow the famous Class 3+ Whitewater Lehigh River for 25 miles, winding all the way up to the town of White Haven.
Along the way, you’ll see the locks and canal systems remnants from the; Massive Economy Changing Coal Mining Industry and Tannery, scenic overlooks and railroad trestles. Remember your camera. The several beautiful waterfalls provide great photo opportunities.

The Lehigh Gorge Trail is open for off road non-motorized biking only. Wide tires are recommended or Cross Trainers. Please Remember the following:
- The trail is shared by hikers, bikers and other users.
- Keep right except to pass.
- Announce passing to other users. Pass with caution. Say “Passing on your left, Thank you!”
- Move off the trail when stopped and keep rail trail clear.
- Please pack in what you pack out, absolutely no open fires or littering.
- Yield to law enforcement, maintenance and emergency vehicles.

White Haven is the northern access area of the Lehigh Gorge and can be reached off Exit 273 of I-80. Follow PA 940 east, being sure to take a right turn at the stop sign in White Haven. Just after crossing the railroad tracks turn right on Main Street and after a sharp, descending left curve bear right to the state park access area.






The trail continues up to Moosehead Lake, a stretch that passes through State Game Lands and Bureau of Forestry property. There is a partnership between both State Game Commission and Bureau of Forestry for maintenance and patrolling of the trail. Moosehead Lake, now a ghost town was once home to Pennsylvania politician and United States Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer.
Mountain Bike in PA and the Lehigh River Rails to Trails to see spectacular wonders of nature and mankind! For 25 miles along the beautiful and world famous Lehigh River you can try a leisurely downhill mountain bike ride on a basically flat 2% decline (a former railway). It is a well maintained trail along this spectacular natural wonder, the Lehigh River, that has breathtaking views 1000 feet deep inside what’s know as the Lehigh River Gorge. The Bear Creek pool offers a fantastic swim point as do various safe pooling points and or eddies along the Lehigh River. There are picnic benches and areas all along the 25 mile trail so pack a lunch and a snack with a bottle of water or two and lets go mountain biking in the Poconos!
You will see famous ruins of the 2nd largest tannery in the US during the 1800’s . Take photos of our national history at Lock #25 and dozens of others of the system used to transport lumber and coal down the river to Bethlehem and Allentown to build the cities of Philadelphia and others along the eastern seaboard. Remnants of this historical beginning to our nations history and infrastructure still remain. Beautiful natural wonders such as Buttermilk Falls and Glen Onoko Falls and creeks and small streams that feed the Lehigh River that offer great photo opportunities exist throughout the trail.
